Child Protective Services, or CPS for short, is a State agency set up by law to ensure the health and safety of children. Any unsafe activity should be reported immediately by calling 1-800-252-5400. The purpose of any involvement by CPS is to keep children safe. CPS is by no means a punishment for parents. Judges in Texas have broad discretion to act when a child’s health or safety is involved. If a court proceeding is involved with your CPS case, you have the right to an attorney. Before taking an action in a CPS case or court, you should seek representation. Your attorney can explain to you the order of the proceedings, your rights and remedies under Texas law, and should be able to advise you as to how best to proceed.
